Spring Break Freebie

Spring Break is over for some of us and just starting for others. Hope everyone gets enough rest and comes back to school recharged and ready to end a great school year! I rested...a lot. I slept in, I shopped, I had lunch with family and friends, and I enjoyed every minute I had at home with my kids! Now, it's time to get ready to go back and listen to all the wonderful stories our little ones have to tell us. Although I know we love to hear all of their stories, we don't have have time to hear the long version from 22 kids. So, here's a little Spring Break Freebie to help your students tell you everything they have to say about their Spring Break.

Winter Storm Text to World

Just like every year, we drove to West Texas for Christmas.  The weather was nice when we drove there but two days later Winter Storm Goliath caught us by surprise.  We didn't have much time to get ready.  We did however, have the essentials:
-food (bread, cooked and then frozen dinners, and canned foods)
-medicines (our toddler had a cough)
-a snow shovel
-plenty of blankets
We did stay inside, we cuddled with blankets, played games, watched movies and waited.  Once we thought we could leave the house, we shoveled the snow out of our driveway, saw some people get stuck and decided it wasn't time to leave the house yet.  The next day, we tried again and by then the roads were more clear but we were still careful to not get stuck.  By the third day, the wind had calmed down enough that we could go outside and build a snowman!

Right now, Winter Storm Kayla is approaching my friends in the Midwest.  Many of our students are experiencing these storms which makes a  great Text-to-World Connection!  Even if your students didn't experience either storm directly, they can hear stories about other people that did.  You can discuss what they did, how long they were inside the house and why, how it looked outside, what they felt, and how they felt when they were finally able to go outside the house again.

Groundhog Day Freebie

February 2nd is Groundhog Day! I guess because I didn't observe Groundhog Day, I never spend much time on it during class. Now, I do try to spend at least one or two days discussing the importance of this tradition in the United States. When you think about it, Groundhog Day has a pretty interesting origin. It turns out that this was a way to use nature way for predicting the weather. As you all know, if it's sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow, its a sign of 6 more weeks of winter and it goes back to his hole. If it's cloudy and the groundhog doesn't see his shadow, it's a sign of spring and it comes out above ground.

In this freebie unit, I have included a mini book that you can use to discuss what Groundhog Day is all about.

While it's Groundhog Day, take advantage and learn a little bit more about groundhogs too!

If you need a little something to supplement your Groundhog Day lesson, download this freebie.
